{"id":19295,"date":"2024-10-03T07:53:08","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T17:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pidf.org\/?p=19295"},"modified":"2024-10-03T07:53:10","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T17:53:10","slug":"maunaloa-elementary-school-achieves-remarkable-turnaround-utilizing-a-community-school-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pidf.org\/maunaloa-elementary-school-achieves-remarkable-turnaround-utilizing-a-community-school-model\/","title":{"rendered":"Maunaloa Elementary School Achieves Remarkable Turnaround Utilizing a Community School Model\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maunaloa-elementary-school.weebly.com\/\" title=\"\">Maunaloa Elementary School<\/a>, in partnership with Partners in Development Foundation&#8217;s (PIDF) Piha Me Ka Pono program, has helped to dramatically reduce chronic absenteeism from 64% to 6% in just one year, marking a significant milestone in the school&#8217;s improvement efforts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located in west Molokai, Maunaloa Elementary School serves approximately 50 K-6th grade students each year. As a Title I school with CSI MRI status, it faced challenges in student performance and attendance. The partnership with PIDF&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/pihamekapono\/\" title=\"\">Piha Me Ka Pono program<\/a>, implementing the Full-Service Community School (FSCS) strategy, has been instrumental in this turnaround.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The resource of having an extra person to coordinate things, bring families in, and find resources has been huge for us this year,&#8221; said Principal Kimberly Ka\u02bbai. These efforts have not only improved attendance but also boosted school spirit and family involvement.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I believe it&#8217;s a total accomplishment for all of us &#8211; our staff, our teachers, our principal who supports everything that we do here. Principal Ka\u02bbai was also a recipient of PIDF\u2019s 2024 Ulu Hana Pewa Award in August, celebrating Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s unsung heroes who bring their community together.
