{"id":220,"date":"2019-07-05T13:01:42","date_gmt":"2019-07-05T17:01:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pidf.blackbaudwp.com\/?p=220"},"modified":"2020-06-29T19:39:28","modified_gmt":"2020-06-29T23:39:28","slug":"070519_kp_grads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pidf.org\/070519_kp_grads\/","title":{"rendered":"57 Ka Pa\u02bbalana Preschool Keiki Graduate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Ka Pa&#039;alana Graduation\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/347403193?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>The Partners in Development Foundation school year officially ended in June as our Ka Pa\u02bbalana Homeless Family Education Program held its annual graduation celebration at the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>For several years now, Ka Pa\u02bbalana staff have worked hard to provide a fun celebration for the graduating Ka Pa\u02bbalana preschool keiki and their families.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>The ceremony consists of each graduating keiki in cap and gown walking across the Blaisdell Center stage to accept their certificate. At the end, they all come together to perform songs for the gathered crowd and one keiki helps to lead a pule before lunch begins.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>This year the theme was &#8220;Celebrating our Artists and their Masterpieces.&#8221; Ka Pa\u02bbalana staff had worked hard to create set pieces for the stage, as well as multiple fun and <a href=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/about\/news\/2018_news\/092818_kp_STEAM_fair\">STEAM-oriented activities<\/a> for the keiki to engage with.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>\n<div align=\"left\">One of the favorite activities at this year&#8217;s graduation was the &#8220;P\u0101\u02bbina P\u012b\u02bb\u0101p\u0101,&#8221; a &#8216;rave&#8217; tent with black lights, alphabet lettering lining the walls, upbeat music, and light-reactive streamers for the keiki to dance with.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019KPGrad-1400x933.jpg\" alt=\"Our of the 57 graduating keiki poses with his teacher\" class=\"wp-image-2924\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019KPGrad-1400x933.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019KPGrad-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019KPGrad-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/2019KPGrad.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption><em>One of the 57 graduating keiki poses with his teacher.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of the Ka Pa\u02bbalana preschool program is to prepare keiki for school success. Children receive an intensive, developmentally-appropriate and culturally-relevant education through preschool teachers and assistants. &nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ka Pa&#8217;alana focuses its outreach on homeless families or those that are transitioning out of temporary housing &#8211; like the Hope Shelter in Kapolei &#8211; as well as at Hawaiian Homelands in Wai\u2018anae and Waim\u0101nalo. &nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The graduation is a symbol [for the families] of accomplishment and of a future for their kids,&#8221; said Terry Nakamura, Ka Pa\u02bbalana&#8217;s Program Manager. He explains how Ka Pa\u02bbalana tries to plant a seed in the minds of the keiki and caregivers that they can go on and complete high school, and go to college. &nbsp; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>These efforts are not only for the keiki, but also for the adults. &nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/KP_Nati_KPGrad-1400x933.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2921\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/KP_Nati_KPGrad-1400x933.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/KP_Nati_KPGrad-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/KP_Nati_KPGrad-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/KP_Nati_KPGrad.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption><em>Ka Pa&#8217;alana participants Nati and her 11 month-old son.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nati has been coming to Ka Pa\u02bbalana for almost two years, starting at the Kaka\u02bbako site with Family Education Coordinator <a href=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/about\/news\/2019_news\/043019_na_makamae\">Cheri Richards<\/a> and Home Visiting Specialist Denise Mazepa before transitioning to the Hope Shelter on O\u02bbahu&#8217;s Leeward Coast. She calls Ka Pa\u02bbalana a &#8220;big blessing.&#8221; &nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a big opportunity to learn and explore new things&#8230; I&#8217;ve learned a lot of life lessons, parenting lessons, and just being a teacher to my son.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She goes on to explain how the graduation means a lot to the parents, about both the achievements of their keiki and their own personal goals as parents. &nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ho\u02bbomaika\u02bbi to all the graduating keiki and their families!
