Kupa \u02bbAina is paving the way for a food-secure Hawai\u02bbi by developing sustainable food production models and providing cultural \u2018\u0101ina-based experiential learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The original purpose of the Kupa \u02bbAina project was to produce food,&#8221; K\u016b\u02bbike continues. Food for the land, food for the people. What was once five acres of former cattle grazing land is now five acres of lush, green plants abundant with life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The five-acre parcel is located near Olomana and has thrived over the last several months. Our Kupa \u02bbAina staff along with numerous volunteer groups have made this possible through efforts such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Installing a 600-gallon input irrigation system;<\/li><li>Generating over 500 gallons of Fish Amino Acids (FAA) created to help grow nutrient-rich crops;<\/li><li>Reseeding 100,000 square feet of land.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 75 volunteers from American Savings Bank, our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/about\/news\/2019_news\/061019_ttm_kupaaina\">T\u016bt\u016b and Me Traveling Preschool<\/a>, the Ke Kama Pono Safehouse for Boys, the Grateful Ministries Immersion Group,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/about\/news\/2018_news\/1016_greenpeace_visits\">Greenpeace<\/a>, and many others have come out to Kupa \u02bbAina to not only help with the farm, but to learn more about our Hawaiian culture and to reconnect to the \u02bb\u0101ina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_8658-1400x933.jpg\" alt=\"Project Director K\u016b\u02bbike cuts the first kalo crop at Kupa \u02bbAina\" class=\"wp-image-2942\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_8658-1400x933.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_8658-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_8658-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pidf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_8658.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption><em>Project Director K\u016b\u02bbike cuts the first kalo crop at Kupa \u02bbAina<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This past year has helped cultivate partnerships among Kupa \u02bbAina\u2019s various stakeholders. These collaborative efforts create a blueprint to demonstrate that Natural Farming has the ability to produce for the commercial needs for our communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA major accomplishment was building and creating a partnership with the State, Kamehameha Schools, as well as Partners in Development Foundation,\u201d K\u016bi\u2019ke explains. \u201cTo spearhead this natural food movement\u2026 really shows the need to address the food insecurities and food dependence that Hawaii has on the outside world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stacy Ferreira, a Kamehameha Schools Executive Strategy Business Consultant, has been instrumental to the Kupa \u2018Aina project. Her responsibilities include helping Kamehameha Schools achieve their vision to change a generation of Native Hawaiians to be a thriving lahui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIf we can do it on five acres, we can do this on 500 acres, we can do this on five islands,&#8221; says Stacy. She states that we should be thinking about what food production can look like, &#8220;because our island state is dependent on so much of our food being brought in.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As Kupa \u02bbAina continues to grow, our projected goals include partnering with other organizations, increasing volunteer groups at the farm, and outreach to our communities to help them be healthy and sustainable &#8212; our primary mission at PIDF.
