Wahi Pana are celebrated, noted and legendary places or landmarks of special interest and historic significance. These special places have distinguishing landmarks, such as mountain peaks, streams, wind, and rain patterns. These characteristics are identified and connected with rich history, oli (chants), mo\u02bbolelo (stories), and mele (songs) that have been passed from one generation to the next. This identification can be perpetuated through embracing the individuals, the \u02bbohana, and the communities’ connection and relationship to these special places.<\/p>\n<p>A sense of place is essential to Native Hawaiians today, whose ancestors have always had an intimate connection with the \u02bb\u0101ina (land).
