K\u016b\u02bbikeokalani “K\u016b\u02bbike” Kamakea-Ohelo is a Waim\u0101nalo native and is the Project Director of our Kupa \u02bbAina Demonstration Natural Farming Project. He believes in connecting to the land, the importance of the greater \u02bb\u0101ina, and can always be heard saying: “you are what you eat.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“My goal,” says K\u016b\u02bbike about his work with Kupa \u02bbAina, “is always to just create impact — a rediscovering of our identity through food.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
K\u016b\u02bbike’s affiliation to Partners in Development Foundation started accidentally — his daughters went through the N\u0101 Pono No N\u0101 \u02bbOhana preschool program several years back. When PIDF president and founder Jan Dill decided to start a program focused on sustainability in Hawai\u02bbi, K\u016b\u02bbike was an easy choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jan describes K\u016b\u02bbike as a man committed to Hawaiian culture and to the role of the \u02bb\u0101ina in the lives of Hawaiian people. “What he does, what he is committed to, is consistent with our desire to bless our community and to help our community become resilient and healthy,” says Jan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
John “Prime” Hina has known K\u016b\u02bbike for some time. Prime is the architect of 808 Urban, a Hawaiian nonprofit arts organization that seeks to teach Hawaiian cultural traditions and stories through street art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“K\u016b\u02bbike, if you can believe it or not, is one of our artists,” Prime jokes. K\u016b\u02bbike is also one of the cultural specialists Prime and the rest of the 808 Urban \u02bbohana talks with to gain insight on projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On making connections to the land, Prime explains that reconnecting to the \u02bb\u0101ina is so much more than that. It includes the ocean, the sky, our whole environment around us. What this means for us, and what K\u016b\u02bbike does through his work, is shifting perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What [K\u016b\u02bbike] is doing is contradicting what we think we know as far as land, as far as how we operate\u2026 when you put it in a Hawaiian lens, you see things differently and you move differently.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
