All the hard work and creativity paid off for our employees, as they proudly brought home the President\u2019s Award for its float entry in the 63rd Aloha Festivals Parade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In keeping with the festival theme \u201cHula: Let the Story Be Told\u201d, we took a page out of the children\u2019s book \u201cKai the Opihi\u201d co-authored by PIDF President Jan E. Hanohano Dill, his wife Judy, and T\u016bt\u016b and Me Director of Research Gail Omoto. Gail’s very talented husband Garrett Omoto illustrated this colorful edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project was an ambitious one, and took many hands under the creative direction of Patrick Izon, husband of PIDF employee Patti. The main characters of \u201cKai the Opihi\u201d took shape one by one, and came to life with the application of flowers, leaves, rice kernels and all other manner of foilage and \u201conce were alive\u201d medium, as is laid out by the rules of the parade coordinators. A reef was built, and waves were added to round out the ocean scene consistent with the storyline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Youngsters from our Kama\u2018ehu youth program rode onboard the float, telling the story through the \u201chula noho\u201d or sitting hula dance while a bubble machine added to the underwater effect. Watching over them was their \u201cT\u016bt\u016b\u201d or grandmother, played by employee Sheree Sakai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marching out front and along side our float were employees from PIDF’s different programs such as T\u016bt\u016b and Me, N\u0101 Pono No N\u0101 \u2018Ohana, Ka Pa\u2018alana, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the reaction from the crowd our \u201cKai the Opihi\u201d float was a huge success, and deserved of the President\u2019s Award. Congratulations to all!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
