The N\u0101 Pono Keiki Program partnered with Kamehameha Schools to bring keiki and their caregivers in the Waim\u0101nalo community to provide culture-based programming designed to build skill sets through hands-on activities which strengthen relationships to \u02bb\u0101ina and culture in community, for keiki and caregivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keiki and their \u02bbohana had the opportunity to learn from PIDF’s Hui Nohona Hawaiian Cultural Specialists team, assisted by Hawaiian Cultural Practitioners. The \u02bbohana ventured all over Waim\u0101nalo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The N\u0101 Pono Keiki Program started at Ho\u02bbomaluhia Gardens to learn about the importance of healing for both physical, spiritual, and mental health. They learned from \u02bbAnakala Homer and \u02bbAnak\u0113 Kapi\u02bbolani different stretching and lomilomi (massage) styles to practice at home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Overlooked by the Ko\u02bbolau mountain range, keiki gathered at PIDF’s Kupa \u02bbAina Natural Farm to plant food crops like \u02bbuala (sweet potato) and distribute pinto beans in open fields to plant and regenerate soil. The N\u0101 Pono keiki learned about the importance of food sustainability, and even got to take home baby kalo plants to care for at home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      At Waim\u0101nalo Beach park, keiki and their \u02bbohana put on the gloves and got to cleaning up. Learning how to m\u0101lama their community helps them connect and appreciate the reason why it’s important to care for our natural resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        At Kaup\u014d Beach Park, \u02bbohana learned how to use natural resources for every day uses. \u02bbAnak\u0113 Malia taught them an oli and mele to help them learn, connect, and pay respects to Waim\u0101nalo. Keiki used smooth ko\u02bba (coral) as pumice stones to relieve the heels of their caregiver’s feet. They also learned how to use sand to smooth surfaces of instruments like ipu and \u02bbohe (bamboo). They learned to m\u0101lama our moana, and picked up any trash they saw around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          One of their last outdoor huaka\u02bbi was to Kaiona Beach Park. Here they listened to mo\u02bbolelo about Kaiona from \u02bbAnakala Aaron Mahi and sang together. They then learned from \u02bbAnak\u0113 Lorna, a hala weaving expert. All the keiki and caregivers were given freshly harvested hala leaves to clean, cut, and press into rolls to prepare for weaving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
