We want to give them opportunities to survive,\u201d Mark Patterson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He co-manages the Kawailoa Youth and Family Wellness Center, which is a partnership initiative from Partners in Development Foundation, Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility, Hale Kipa, Kinai \u02bbEha, Olomana School, and RYSE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kupa Aina farm is one piece of a large vocational training system that assists helps homeless and incarcerated youth and victims of sex trafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPre-COVID, we were serving up to 200 to 300 kids a day, which is remarkable,\u201d Patterson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Machijah Perez-Fonseca went through the program and now works at the farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom when I was volunteering to working full-time now, it\u2019s been almost like a whole year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Farming program that aims to help at-risk youth find their way is a finalist for $20M grant\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/617270805?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>KYFWC wants to establish a residential mental health campus for minors. The ultimate goal is to perfect a program rooted in Native Hawaiian practices that ends youth incarceration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re almost there with the girls, and the boys will come soon after,\u201d Patterson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kawailoa caught the eye of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. It named KYFWC one of 10 finalists in its Racial Equity 2030 challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe top three finalists will receive $20 million each over a 10-year period,\u201d Patterson said. \u201cThe next two finalists will receive $10 million each.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other five will also get continuing financial support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An old canoe outside one of the campus\u2019s buildings is a visual reminder that the project is on a journey and there\u2019s a destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to say that this model can be replicated in the mainland, on the continent, and any indigenous population around the world,\u201d Patterson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KYFWC partners with local and national agencies and organizations.
